A Little Progress

by Joshua on May.26, 2009, under Site

Three things I want to note for you all.

  1. The forums are now live.  Check them out, you can also get there by clicking the link in upper right hand corner.  Very fresh, I’m still working out the kinks in the default theme.
  2. This site now has a mobile phone ready version.  Go to http://squareamp.com in your iPhone (or any mobile phone) and you’ll see just how awesome it looks.
  3. Look at the background of this site.  Now refresh.  Now refresh again.   There are ten total, and more coming from other games.  These were made courtesy of Alex, who if you recall I made a posting about his tribute site yesterday.  If you haven’t had a chance to go visit his website yet, check out my post from yesterday.

And that’s it.  I need to get some sleep.  I hope you like the progress at which things are moving here, Zephy and I have an idea for a games/content too that I’ll be looking into over the coming week.

Beginning Anew

by Zephyrantes on May.24, 2009, under Site

Hey all,

Just wanted to do some follow up on Josh’s earlier post.

For the last four years, my primary function on SquareAMP has been to report news about the goings on with Square Enix. I have enjoyed the opportunity to share that news with the community, but especially in the past year it has become more and more difficult to motivate myself into composing those news post (I’m sure a lot of you noticed how rarely the front page was being updated). This has a lot to do with the fact, and I hate to say it, that Square Enix has lost a lot of what made them and intriguing company to begin with. They rarely ever try to wow their fan base like they used to (remember how the gaming community collectively flipped the heck out when that first trailer for Advent Children came out back in 2003?). Josh will be the first to tell you, and I’m inclined to agree, that a lot of this has to do with the direction that the company is now on under the guidance of president Yoichi Wada. What you hear that’s important about them these days is which company they are looking to buy out next (see: Taito, Eidos, and the failed attempt with Tecmo), not what new games they are coming out with.

But enough crying over spilt milk. In light of this, it is clear that I must expand the scope of what I’m doing if I want to stay engaged with the whole gaming news thing (and I do). I’m not entirely sure just how much I will expand or in what direction; I’ll just work with what seems interesting to write about for now.

Josh and I have been talking for quite some time now about trying to revitalize SquareAMP. What you see now is step 1. We both have a lot of ideas for expanding the content of our new home, and we hope you guys will want to participate in that effort when the time comes, but for now the focus will be on building up the blog side of things. We’ll see where it goes from there.

Something Different

by Admin on May.24, 2009, under Site

Hello to the SquareAMP faithful.

Tonight something has happened that has not occurred in quite some time… that is, effort has gone in to the site to make it something that can build into a larger community again.  Over the last few years, SquareAMP has essentially turned into a vBulletin community of 15-20 people with just a front page for the casual postings of news related to the Square Enix video game company.

While the history embedded within our vBulletin database stretches back nearly 8 years, all efforts I have made in the past to move this site back into a larger website have failed because of this software.  I have gone through multiple revisions of CMS software to try to keep vBulletin im tact, but in the end these would all be reduced in functionality because of this.

So tonight we do something new - something different - the SquareAMP backend has been completely gutted and deleted.  In its place, I have installed the blogging software WordPress along with a plugin pack of social networking features called BuddyPress.  Coupled with a cool looking theme I have, and what you have here on the front page probably looks the same as what the SquareAMP page has looked in the past but it isn’t.  We’re able to move forward now and start to build the site SquareAMP was, and what SquareAMP will become yet again.

And if you care to join me - which I hope you will - the first step is to click “Sign Up” there at the top.  Once you have an account, you are free to start in on the fun.

Among the new features:

  • Completely cross posted site, with user IDs and all, that allow you to do anything within the squareamp domain.
  • Expanded user profile that allows you to define who you are as a Square gamer and an RPG gamer.  The profile will be greatly expanded as I put more effort into it.
  • The ability to BLOG.  Yes, blog!  You can blog in a million places on the web right now, but will make this unique is that your write-ups here on this site have the ability to be part of SquareAMP.  No longer is “reporting” on video game news limited to 2-3 people with forum access.  Any of you can now write for this site, and quality work will get promoted to the front page.

So dig in, get used to the site, and have your friends check it out too.  Please enjoy!
